As writers, if you think about it, we need to keep a bewildering number of aspects of language in our minds simultaneously. Obviously, there’s spelling, grammar and syntax. We certainly need to choose words that have the right connotations – woe betide the author who doesn’t get this right. Then there’s clarity – sometimes we are so close to the subject – and often so expert – that we forget that the reader isn’t. The result can be impenetrable blocks of text that soon lead to a twitchy index finger on the mouse.
A copy-editor is very good at keeping all these things in mind at the same time, and this is his or her particular talent. Copy-editors might be slightly odd in this respect, but if you’re this close to publishing valuable content, it makes sense to employ one.
